I noticed in a recent issue of Time Magazine an Article about Woodie Guthrie and in it was a photograph of his hand-written original version of This Land Is Your Land. It was interesting to see scratched-out words as he changed some of the lyrics, i.e. the original title was "God Bless Amerca For Me" and "...to the New York Island" was originally "...to the Staten Island". I couldn't help but think back to August of 2000 in Oregon sitting around a table with Mickey, his guitar and a pile of old notebooks he was singing from. I wonder what changes he may have made to some of his original lyrics. Could a "red dirt Georgia farm boy" have been a "black dirt Mississippi farm boy"? And, who knows, maybe a depot down in Guthrie was a depot down in Memphis. Anyway, August of 2000 holds a lot of wonderful memories for me and a lot of others who were there.
