Back in the mid seventies, Mickey told me during one of our phone conversations that he would be playing the Great Southeastern Music Hall in Atlanta on such-and-such a date and he invited me to make the short drive up from Columbus and catch the concert. He asked me to arrive early and come back stage prior to the concert for a visit. My brother, Chuck, had never met the Mick, so I asked if it would be all right to bring him along. Of course, Mickey said yes. To make a long story short, when we got there, I looked up one of the employees at the music hall and told him that Mick had invited my brother and I to visit with him in the dressing room. The guy just laughed at me and said, "Yea, right! Everybody is Mr. Newbury's friend today." I didn't get upset, I just handed the guy a twenty dollar bill and told him to go and let Mick know that Jody Powers and his brother were out in the lobby, and that we were there to visit with him in the dressing room prior to the concert. A short time later, this guy comes running out of the door leading to the dressing room area waving at my brother and I. He handed me the $20 and kept repeating, "Right this way, sir. Right this way!" I remember that that night was very, very special. A newcomer, Tom Waites, was opening for Mick that night and there were just a smattering of folks in the audience while Tom was on. But by the time Mick was scheduled to perform, the room was SRO and the music hall was hooking up speakers out in the lobby, and out on the street, so that the crowd in both places could hear Mick's concert. There were hundreds of folks outside who couldn't get in and there was no way they were gonna leave. Chuck and I had a great visit with Mick, and the concert was one of his best ever. If I remember correctly, a local college radio station recorded the concert with plans to play the recording the following Sunday evening. I wonder if a copy of that tape is laying around somewhere. I'd love to have a copy if that happens to be the case.
