I am sure some songs have been written out of pain but I don't think it has to be your pain. Some great songs have been written by writers who were feeling someone else's pain and wanted to tell the story. A good song is a story. It may or may not be yours.
When I am working on a song, I never think about whether it will be sad or happy. I think only how to put down what I am feeling at the moment. But when I have finished, if the song does not cause an emotional response when I read it back, I know it is wrong. I put it aside for a while. As Mickey has said, the words must ring true or your audience will know. This is especially true when you write Gospel songs.
