Here is what I wrote to Jimmie in an email:
"In order to graduate with my bachelor's degree in studio art, it is mandatory that I do a senior art exhibition. Some of the work I am doing is inspired by the music of Mac Davis. I would have liked him to know about it, to gain his blessing or to let him know that he is still remembered fondly by his fans. I can certainly understand if Mr Davis wouldn't like to grant interviews to the media or reporters, but to me this does seem a personal matter and not a public one, and I don't plan to publish or broadcast anything we speak about."
Indeed, sometimes it is a wonder to ask the writer of a song what was meant, to compare and contrast it with how I translated it to the visual media. So to answer the question: I suppose it is rather important to me because any of my artwork is a self-portrait and a statement to the world ... sometimes, a statement to who or what inspired it.
