Hello all --

Just wanted to share something that happened at school today, totally unplanned...As some of you may know I teach at an international school where we sing as our school song, the song "Let There Be Peace On Earth." Well, each year I begin teaching it to the new kindergarten students...although I always wonder how much they can relate to what it's all about... So I did my usual thing with them, teaching them the words and talking about it in terms hopefully they can understand...especially explaining some of the difficult vocab...This began over two weeks ago...

Anyway, this morning when I was finishing teaching the school song to the Kdgn. classes, one student, (who was kind of a newer student and had missed some of our earlier discussions), Maya, raised her hand and asked: "Mrs. Hayes, what is peace?" Well, since we'd already talked about it in class, I asked the other students if they could answer. Here were some of their responses:

>>Eve: "Not to fight" >>Matt: "Be nice to others" >>Christian: "Helping friends, helping them work. If you're really having a hard time, then friends can help." >>Kayla: "Peace is like a part of earth. It keeps earth from fighting." >>Jordon: "A promise you keep forever" >>Brandon: "Not fighting" >>Rory: "Don't shoot a cannon ball" >>George: "Stop killing animals and people, and stop cutting down trees, that's peace." >>Nicole: "Don't be mean to people" >>Jaeger: "Take turns" >>Karena: "You can't throw a ball at someone's eye" >>Ryan: "Always use respect" >>Miranda: "Don't break a promise" >>Tovia: "If you be quiet and there's no wars." >>Jai: "To be very quiet and don't make a sound" >>Ethan: "People being nice to you."

Well, as I say, this wasn't planned, but in light of Sept. 11th being tomorrow, I thought it couldn't have been timed better....and just thought I'd share it with my friends on the porch...You are all in my thoughts and prayers...

April
