It is a similar Spring day here in northern Victoria, Griffon, the sunshine so incongruous with the events we are remembering. I add my love to yours as it flies north over the big blue pond. We Aussies are thinking of you "Yankees" (as you have been called "down under" since the days your servicemen visited Melbourne and Sydney during WWII).

I recall that, one year ago, I turned to the porch as this horror unfolded. I chatted to porchers as, before our eyes on television in the US and Australia simultaneously, we shared in the shock and the disbelief. We were friends taking in the insult to our way of life together, feeling together that something terribly frightening was changing our world... even though we are on opposite sides of a vast world. Love has joined us and let us pray that this love will grow and matter over time. Like you, Dave, I pray for the children and I feel sad that I will not totally rejoice when my children bring little ones into this world (but I will keep my fears deep inside).

My brother-in-law was in Washington with our Prime Minister as the planes hit, only a short distance away from the Pentagon. My sister was on the phone from Canberra, worried sick, and it was many hours before we knew her husband was OK. This event has left a terrible mark on him. I can imagine how terrible it must be for all of you. And as for those closely affected.... words fail.

My love and prayers are all I can offer but they are with you all.

Karen
