There has been a lot of talk about "heroes" lately. In thinking about it, we seem to be too tied to images rather than reality sometimes. For example, John Wayne is a hero to many, but he was an actor and his battles were all on a sound stage. He sat out WWII. Jimmy Stewart flew combat missions, but John Wayne was the tough guy. (Remember The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence?) President Ronald Regan gave speeches and made US propaganda movies in WWII, but talked tough and wore cowboy outfits. George Bush was called a "wimp," but he was one of the youngest navy pilots and won the Distinguished Flying Cross. It's good to have heroes but we need to define them and select them better. Ted Williams and John Unitas were athletic heroes of mine, but limited to their sports. Not "life" heroes. Maybe 9-11 reminded us real heroes aren't actors or politicians reading lines,or sports figures, but real people doing real things, acting outside themselves for someone or something else. There are a lot of heroes, we just need to look closer.
