I"ve definitely seen Crosby's name quite often in hymn books. But never in poetry books. It brings up an interesting question: when do song lyrics become poetry. At what level of songwriting can the lyrics be studied as poems, worthy of examination without the music? Does a songwriter have to publish a book of poems, not a disc of lyrics, to be considered a poet?
Is Rod McKuen worthy of either title? ;-)
