Larry Gatlin was just a Mickey Newbury wannabe ! If you listen to his first few recordings ie;"Bitter They Are "..you'll hear him doing his darndest to copy Mickeys style.....BUT he couldn't pull it off....Fair imitation..but a miss is as good as a mile. That's not to say Larry is not a good singer and songwriter...just that he is Not in Mickeys league at all. To give him credit tho..he did say ...before he came to Nashville that he was a big fan of Mickeys.
