I am sitting here remembering Mickey, and reading an article from "Country Song Roundup Annual", a pulp magazine that I bought in 1971 for 75 cents... (I just figured out there is no "cents" symbol on a PC keyboard like there was on a typewriter then... One of the articles was "Waylon Jennings- A Superstar Looking For A Place To Happen"... I could learn to play guitar the "Chet Atkins Way" then for $2.98 (Boy, that would have been money well spent!)!! Tammy and George were still married, Sammi Smith was still "The Girl Who's Turning On The World"! Skeeter Davis, Hag, and Johnny Cash were still young ...

And then there was "Mickey Newbury - Doin' His Thing" .... Mickey was a young man of 31 then, and in this 4 page article, it was evident that he had the same convictions about his music, his life, and his family even then...

"I made it understood in the beginning that I wasn't really a performer, I was a songwriter........"Besides that, I'm happy.I'm really happy. I've got a beautiful wife, I live on a nice boat, I got what I want, I can go where I wanna go, and I haven't always been this way and I appreciate it. I don't wanna change it".

Mickey, you never did.....
