When the first song played on our weekly country radio show last week was the Trilogy, I feared that it would be followed by an announcement of sad news. Sincerest condolences to Mickey's family and close friends. Mickey's wonderful music has meant so much to my friend Rick and I over the past 30 ish years. Among his contempory songwriters he was in a league of his own; nobody has made my spine tingle as often as Mickey. Throughout this time, that contradiction has existed where on the one hand you cannot comprehend why he is not an enormous commercial success; while at the same time loving the fact that you are among the priveliged few who are in on his secret. We seem to be losing so many of our musical heroes, with Townes and John Hartford just in particular being personally sadly missed in recent years; but Mickey's loss ranks with close friends and family. We can only be thankful that he has left us with such a rich and timeless legacy with his work; his last release of new work, Long Road Home being a real masterpiece and proving what a genius he still was.
