In 1983, I took a good friend to Nashville with me to attend a Music City event which I think was associated with the Nashville Songwriter's Association. That good friend's name is Jim Frank. Mickey was in town, and at the cabin, and he said it would be all right for me to bring Jim out to meet him.

Jim and I drove up and we saw that Mickey's car door was open. On closer inspection, we saw Mickey on his knees, just outside the car, kneeling right beside the driver's seat. The scene didn't look right and Jim and I ran over to see if Mick was OK. He was, but he'd gotten himself in a fix. His cruise control wasn't working and he'd tried to fix it himself. He'd taken it apart and had the parts in one hand and the screws in the other ... and he was still trying to hold onto the cruise apparatus to keep it from straining the wiring. When we walked up, Mick just said, in that typical, low-key voice, "help!"

Jim took the screws out of one hand and I took the parts out of the other and the Mick just smiled at us. "How long have you been kneeling like that," I said. "Longer than I wanted to," Mick replied.

We retired to the cabin and sat in the living room and talked. Then, when Mick found out that Jim was a big fan, he pulled out the guitar and gave the two of us a free, two-hour concert playing any songs we wanted to hear. He even wrote one on the spot that night (can't remember which one, dang it).

That night is one of my most precious memories. And it's one of Jim's, too.
