Mickey Newbury passes away(A Tribute from Gerry Ford)
Country Singer-Songwriter Mickey Newbury, died peacefully in his sleep Saturday 28 September , at his home in Oregon, after a long illness with a rare blood disease. He was born on 19 May , 1940, in Houston. As a member of the US Air Force he was stationed in England for 4 years. He moved to Nashville in the early 60`s and wrote his songs in different styles, having one of his songs on the Easy Listening, R&B, Country and Pop charts at one time. He recorded for RCA , Mercury,ABC, and Electra Records, but didn`t have much chart success as a recording artiste.
His great success came as a songwriter having a string of songs recorded by great stars like Elvis Presley,Jerry Lee Lewis, Kenny Rodgers, Ray Charles, Lynn Anderson and many others. He had his first hit in 1966 when Don Gibson recorded Funny, Familiar, Forgotten Feelings. Many of his songs are now regarded by many as classics, including Here Comes the Rain, Baby, Sweet Memories, Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition was In), She Even Woke Me Up To Say Goodbye, Why You Been Gone So Long, Time Is a Thief, Sunshine, and Frisco Mabel Joy.
Johnny Cash called him "a Poet"
Mickey will no doubt be best remembered for The American Trilogy, ( Battle Hymn of the Republic, Dixie and All My Trials) 3 songs he didn`t write but placed together for an album. The trilogy was then recorded and popularised by Elvis and became the anthem for country music clubs across the UK.
(In an interview I did with him at the Wembley Country Festival some years ago Mickey himself could not understand why!!!).
