Griffon,

Hush puppies are a fried corn meal & onion & buttermilk & flour mix rolled into little biscuits shaped buns. They were by the slave cooks in Southern society to throw to the dogs to keep them from jumping on the food carriers when they carried the dishes from the kitchen to the manor house, which in some instances was two separate buildings. They were meant to 'hush them puppies".

The shoes, however ... maybe barbecued???
