You're very welcome Gin...questions about the business end of the music business are not "naive". One of the problems is that artists are "naive" when it comes to that side of the business. In the beginning all they want is a contract, regardless of future considerations. They find, to late, where the money comes from and where it goes. Record companies charge back to the artist everything from studio time to the limo the promotion guy rented to take them around to the radio stations. Publishing is so very important. Every time you hear a record played on the radio or a song performed on television, the writer of the song and the publishing company receive a payment through ASCAP, BMI or one of two other companies. The artist receives nothing for those plays, unless the artist wrote the song. Unless the artist is established, such as Neil Diamond or Garth Brooks, chances are most of their income comes from personal appearances. A one or two hit wonder can't really expect to receive a dime from the record company.

What is the line from the Alabama song..."Just a novice in a business that's never what it seems.."
