Think of it as a language.

Although he couldn't write or read a complicated score, Mickey was proficient at using the language to "speak" and create.

Like most of us "by ear" musicians, he did know chord structure, which is the basis of the language, and had no trouble communicating his ideas to other players.

Of course, he was also a genius.
