I have a question, and am confused. I know somebody on the Proch can help me.

Lately, in a few interviews with Mick, I've read where all the strings in the 'Interludes' on "'Frisco Mabel Joy" were done with a steel.

I got a buddy that's a local studio musician of some note, and he is a killer steel-player. Can play anything, any style. I was telling him that, and he's also a big Newbury fan, so he went home, listened to the 'Interludes' and call me cussin'. Said he'd spent days trying to get his steel to sound like strings. He has every recording, effects device known to man, and said he just couldn't do it.

I also read, a long time ago, right around the time the album was released, that the strings were done on an old ARP String Ensemble synthesizer. I have on old ARP 2600, an Ensoniq ESQ-1, and the ESQ-1, which is a lot newer than the ARP, comes closest to emulating the strings on the LP.

Can somebody put 2 poor ol' country boys' minds at ease? My steel-playin' buddy can't eat nor sleep, and I'm just confused.
