I e-mailed my son-in-law, who plays steel for Lyle, and Charlie Day, who uncle was the best that there ever was...and asked them to check it out and provide you with an answer...yes is was Pete Drake that did the talking steel...but I think that something along those lines is also used to make the string sounds.
