I think it was Weldon that did the steel on some of the early stuff..one of the first "toys" to hit the hillbilly pickers was a thing called the "fuzz tone", it was a small 2"x2" deal that pluged into the input jack of a steel and then on to the volume pedal, which helped control the high end noise that goes along with distortion units in general. Gene O'Neal used one for various things. I believe that is what was used on the tunes you are asking about, and they are still around. Most any decent distortion unit(Rat) will do, but ya gotta put it between the guitar and the volume pedal, the Fuzz Tone only had one knob that turned the effect up or down, we would turn it ALL the way up, add piles of verb and some vibrato(not much)...ya just have to tweek it in man...back then on sessions they stacked tracks(only had eight)and pinged em down, so it had a lot to do with the studio board and stuff. Hope that helps, heck, call the Opry and ask for Weldon..maybe he'll let ya borrow his. and for the record it's an old fart named Buddy Emmons that came up with the talking steel guitar deal as well as most EVERY decent "toy" for the steel guitar as well as pickups, tunings, pedals, etc. and was involved in so many different design ideas for so many different companies that I've lost track of which, not just the Emmons guitar. Uncle never missed a beat teasing him about his "toys"(he don't need them he's just the genius that comes up with em)and Big E sir..I still think you're the best steel player in the world...next to me and uncle Dad.....>
